Our own trucks travel primarily in Montana and throughout the northwest (think Idaho, Washington, Oregon), but as a licensed broker with strong relationships with thousands of car carriers, we have established regular car shipping routes throughout the country. One of those routes is from Montana to Minnesota.
There are two main trucking corridors that go from Montana to Minnesota, I-94 and I-90. Most of our Montana to Minnesota auto transports are from Billings, MT to the metro areas in Minnesota of Fargo/Moorhead, St. Cloud, and Twin Cities (Minneapolis/St. Paul). All three of these metro areas in Minnesota are served by I-94 from Billings.
One of the most challenging things about shipping cars from Montana to Minnesota is the weather, specifically winter! Both of these states have their fair share of harsh winters, and so do the states of North Dakota and South Dakota that car carriers have to travel through to get from Montana to Minnesota. Auto transports in the winter months can sometimes take a day or two longer to complete depending on the road conditions at the time. We ship cars on this route all the time during the winter so it’s not a huge challenge, but you may need a little more patience if you’re shipping a car in the winter thanks to Mother Nature!

Shipping cars in and out of Montana is challenging for a couple reasons. First, take a look at the landscape of the state. The east side of the state is comprised of the Great Plains with sparsely populated towns and cities. Heading west from the Great Plains you run into the Rocky Mountains, and then you have the Cabinet Mountains and the Bitterroot Range in the west. Second, consider Montana’s weather. It has some of the harshest and longest winters in the country. You combine Montana’s challenging landscape and its weather, and you can understand why shipping cars to and from the state isn’t exactly a walk in the park.
The best car shipping locations in Montana are along the I-90 corridor from Billings to Bozeman, but most of the other cities along I-90, even up to Missoula aren't bad.
Other solid car shipping locations include those along I-15 from Helena down to the I-15 and I-90 junction.
Finally, those locations along I-94 from Billings to the North Dakota border are decent car shipping locations. This is a 250-mile trucking corridor that is heavily traveled by car carriers so locations along it such as Miles City and Glendive are all good locations to ship cars to or from.
The challenging car shipping locations in Montana are those locations 50 miles or more north or south of I-90 and I-94. The further away you get from those interstates, the more challenging the car shipments will be, meaning they will cost more money and will take more time to complete.
Other challenging car shipping locations in the state include those locations north of Helena and south of Dillon on I-15.
We are strategically based in Billings, MT. The two major trucking corridors in the state join and divide here, I-90 and I-94, so it is an ideal hub for car shipments to and from Montana. For the convenience of our customers, we provide free secured terminal shipping in Billings for pick ups and drop offs if needed.

We’ve been doing more and more Minnesota auto transports, especially from Montana to Minnesota, but from (and to) other states as well. Like all states, Minnesota has “easy” locations and more challenging locations to ship a car to or from. Let’s start with the easy car shipping locations in Minnesota.
There are three main trucking corridors in Minnesota. There is I-90 that runs west/east in far southern Minnesota, I-94 that runs west/east in the middle of the state, and then I-35 that runs north/south on the eastern side of the state. Anything on or close to these corridors are going to be solid car shipping locations, but some are better than others.
The best car shipping location is the Twin Cities metro area (Minneapolis/St. Paul) where the state’s primary population is and where I-94 and I-35 intersect. St. Cloud in central Minnesota along I-94 is probably the next best location. Albert Lea in southern Minnesota along I-35 and I-90, and Rochester, which is close to I-90 in southeast Minnesota, are good locations as well.
Turning to the more challenging car shipping locations in Minnesota, the Fargo/Moorhead area can be hit or miss. We've found that in most cases starting or ending in this area can be challenging (but not always). It is an area served by both I-94 and I-29 so it does help for any "northern Minnesota auto transports," but even with those interstates in play, it can be a challenging location.
The most challenging car shipping locations are those locations in extreme north or northeast Minnesota. If you draw a line from the Fargo/Moorhead area in the west to Duluth in the east, anything north of that line is going to be challenging, and the further north you go from that line, the tougher the transport will be. By challenging we mean the transport may take a few additional days and more money to complete. The reason is car carriers don’t go to those areas on a regular basis. Any of those locations are going to be “out of the way” for most carriers so we may need more time and more money to find a carrier willing to go to those locations.
As a door-to-door auto transporter, we can ship a car to or from any location in Minnesota. We’ve shipped cars as far north as Hallock, MN to as far south as Albert Lea and everything in between!
